DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 18\, 4:00 pm Baldwin Auditorium\, Durham\nThe Choral Society of Durham\, Rodney Wynkoop – director\, with Mallarmé Music \nRarely performed because of the sheer difficulty of singing it\, Beethoven’s monumental Missa Solemnis was considered by the composer to be his greatest composition\, a culmination of his life-long desire to combine music and philosophy. The full power of this piece\, according to one writer\, lies in the glory of its vision\, that musical struggle required\, and the joy of obstacles overcome. The Choral Society’s 150 singers will be joined by a superb orchestra from Mallarmé Music and a quartet of professional soloists.\n \n\nTickets: $5-$25 PURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:SERIES CONCERT #6: Incessant Hum: theatre/music hybrid event celebrating Beethoven!
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, the world celebrated the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth; five years later\, Mallarme Music will pay tribute to the composer’s legacy and his contribution to our world\, with an original script by Jeff Neuman: Incessant Hum. \nCommissioned by the Colorado Chamber Players\, the production is a chamber music/theatre hybrid in honor of Beethoven. Playwright Neuman is himself profoundly hard of hearing. \nDirected by Eric Love\, Incessant Hum explores the emotional world that Beethoven experienced\, as he lost his hearing and his ability to perform as a pianist and conductor. With Austin Campion as Beethoven and Alissa Roca as the mysterious Elise\, Mallarme Music performs excerpts from the op. 95 and 135 quartets; the Archduke Trio; Piano Sonata\, op. 32 and Moonlight Sonata; Cello and Piano Sonata No. 5 in D Major; and “Ode To Joy” from Symphony No. 9. \nJacqueline Wolborsky and Tiffany Kang – violin\nSuzanne Rousso – viola\, Nate Leyland – cello\nDaniel Seyfried – piano \nPROGRAM NOTES \nTickets are $10/$15/$30 PURCHASE

ADA parking is available at the surface lot at the same address. \nJohann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas are often considered the pinnacle of German sacred music\, works whose theological depth and emotional resonance touch deep places in the human soul. This year’s cantata series\, “Bach &\,” features cantatas\, concerti\, and organ works by Bach and his contemporaries\, illuminating the connections and differences between these Baroque masters. \nThis concert contrasts the music of Bach and Vivaldi. A lot of Vivaldi’s music was written for young players\, which is recognized in this performance by having Duke students play the solo violin parts. They will perform on the music department’s historic period instruments\, tuned to Baroque-era pitch. \nLearn more about the music in this concert at a pre-concert lecture by Duke Chapel Organist Chad Fothergill at 4:00 p.m. in the Divinity School’s Goodson Chapel. \nFamilies with young children\, or those not able to attend the concert\, are welcome to visit the rehearsal in Duke Chapel on Saturday\, November 8\, between 1:30 and 4:00 p.m.
