SUMMARY:NC HIP FESTIVAL PREVIEW LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:With Dr. Jonathan Kramer \nHistorical performance practices or HIP\, is the presentation of music in a style we believe is representative of how a work was heard at the time it was written. The 2018 NC HIP Music Festival will present musical performances and events centered around these practices with period instruments from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. Dr. Jonathan Kramer from NC State and Duke universtiy\, will speak about the HIP movement in the last 30 years. He will reveal the differences between historical and modern performance\, how standards of early music performance are determined (since we have no musical recordings from the 17th century) and the development of musical instruments from Renaissance to the 19th century. \nFREE

SUMMARY:VIOLINS OF HOPE\, book reading by James Grymes
DESCRIPTION:James Grymes\, “Violins of Hope: Violins of the Holocaust — Instruments of Hope and Liberation”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Regulator welcomes music historian James Grymes for a reading and book signing of his new book\, Violins of Hope: Violins of the Holocaust–Instruments of Hope and Liberation in Mankind’s Darkest Hour. Grymes tells the remarkable stories about violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust\, and Amnon Weinstein\, the renowned Israeli violin maker dedicated to bringing these inspirational instruments back to life. Weinstein has dedicated the past 20 years to restoring these violins of the Holocaust in tribute to those who were lost\, including 400 members of his own family. Juxtaposing tales of individual violins with one man’s harrowing struggle to reconcile his own family’s history and the history of his people\, Violins of Hope is a poignant\, affecting\, and ultimately uplifting look at the Holocaust and its enduring impact. \nViolins of Hope is a National Jewish Book Award winner. The Mallarme Chamber Players will perform a concert\, Violins of Hope\, inspired by Grymes’s book\, at The Judea Reform Temple in Durham on November 9; for ticket information: http://mallarmemusic.org/?event=series-concert-2-violins-of-hope&event_date=2017-11-09. \nThe author reading and booksigning at The Regulator on Nov. 2 at 7PM is free and open the the public (no tickets required).
