Early music performers rediscovered forgotten repertoire\, recovered premodern instruments \, followed performance practices at variance from modern musicianship\, and altered the relationship between performer and listener by their style\, dress\, and playing locales. Initially\, the Early Music Movement\, like all social movements\, depended on “charismatic” zeal and attracted performers with diverse objectives and orientations.  Arnold Dolmetsch\, David Munroe\, and Noah Greenberg represent this diversity\, and we will see/hear examples of the Early Music they championed. Over the last 75 years\, many of their innovations have become accepted by contemporary performers\, and we will see/hear examples of this new mainstream. “Historically informed performance” or “HIP” is their label today for a creative translation of past music that respects its differences from present practice. The talk will be illustrated with many musical examples and there will be a “petting zoo” of instruments from the past to try afterward (none that bite or claw\, however). \nSaturday\, February 1\, 3:00pm Hayti Heritage Center\, Durham\nCONCERT: Everywhere a Theorbo (Tickets $25/$10)\nMallarmé Chamber Players: Music of William Lawes\, Thomas Baltzar\, Bellerofonte Castaldi and Robert di Vesée\nWilliam Simms and Richard Stone – theorbo; David Wilson and Elizabeth Phelps – violin; Gail Ann Schroeder and Brent Wissick – viola da gamba \nSaturday\, February 1\, 8:00pm\, Baldwin Auditorium\, Durham\nCONCERT: A Retrospective Recital (FREE)\nWorks by Beethoven and Vorisek played on an 1815 Streicher copy by Thomas and Barbara Wolf\nRandall Love – fortepiano and piano more\n \nSunday\, February 2\, 5:15pm Duke Chapel\nCONCERT: Duke Bach Cantata Series (FREE)\nPhilip Cave – conductor J.S. DESCRIPTION:Robert Wiene’s THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI\nIn conjunction with the Carolina Theatre of Durham\, Mallarme presents The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with original chamber music composed by Eric Schwartz. This film catapulted German Expressionism into film history. SUMMARY:A Series of Unfortunate Musical Events with Low and Lower
DESCRIPTION:Low & Lower\, Brooks Whitehouse – cello and Paul Sharpe – bass\, America’s #1 selling cello/bass duo celebrates its popular mashup of comedy\, virtuosity and satire with a new show\, A Series of Unfortunate Musical Events. \nThe show centers around a musical settings of two great adventure tales from the wilds of Alaska. In his musical morality play Eagle Feather\, Paul Sharpe warns in epic verse of the moral and legal perils of transporting the body parts of endangered species across state lines. From the open waters of Alaska’s scenic Kachemak Bay to the suburban comforts of small town North Carolina\, this modern classic pits the deep love of nature and of family against the deeper fear of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. \nFrom this we move to Robert Service’s timeless classic The Cremation of Sam McGee in a dramatic setting by composer John Allemeier – recited\, sung and otherwise delivered by Low & Lower with tragedy\, irony and humor as it has never been delivered before. This imaginative take on an old favorite moves seamlessly from recitative to fiddle tune to country ballad in an expansive telling of this tale of arctic redemption. \nPLUS:\nLawrence Dillon Play On Words\nBruce Tippette New Birth for cello\, bass and small string orchestra featuring the Riverside High School Advanced Orchestra/ Sara Moore\, conductor \n$25/Adults – $10/children-students in advance – $5/children-students at the door subject to availability
