DESCRIPTION:Low & Lower\, Brooks Whitehouse – cello and Paul Sharpe – bass\, America’s #1 selling cello/bass duo celebrates its popular mashup of comedy\, virtuosity and satire with a new show\, A Series of Unfortunate Musical Events. \nThe show centers around a musical settings of two great adventure tales from the wilds of Alaska. In his musical morality play Eagle Feather\, Paul Sharpe warns in epic verse of the moral and legal perils of transporting the body parts of endangered species across state lines. From the open waters of Alaska’s scenic Kachemak Bay to the suburban comforts of small town North Carolina\, this modern classic pits the deep love of nature and of family against the deeper fear of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. \nFrom this we move to Robert Service’s timeless classic The Cremation of Sam McGee in a dramatic setting by composer John Allemeier – recited\, sung and otherwise delivered by Low & Lower with tragedy\, irony and humor as it has never been delivered before. This imaginative take on an old favorite moves seamlessly from recitative to fiddle tune to country ballad in an expansive telling of this tale of arctic redemption. \nPLUS:\nLawrence Dillon Play On Words\nBruce Tippette New Birth for cello\, bass and small string orchestra featuring the Riverside High School Advanced Orchestra/ Sara Moore\, conductor \n$25/Adults – $10/children-students in advance – $5/children-students at the door subject to availability

SUMMARY:Bluegrass Blend with Hank\, Pattie & The Current VIRTUALLY
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAM NOTES: 9-2-21 Program Pages FINAL \nViolinists Jacqueline Wolborsky and Jeanine Wynton\, violist Suzanne Rousso and cellist Bonnie Thron join two of North Carolina’s veteran bluegrass musicians– Hank Smith on Banjo and Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw on fiddle— to create modern\, American\, acoustic music featuring the full range of their talents as composers and arrangers. \nThe band\, Hank\, Pattie & the Current\, makes use of traditional bluegrass instrumentation in a nontraditional way to present original music to the listener that goes beyond the limits of the idiom. The arrangements take on a new level of maturation that follows in the footsteps of Bela Fleck\, Mark O’Connor\, Chris Thile\, Sam Bush\, Edgar Meyer\, and Tony Rice. Hank\, Pattie & The Current want to pick up where seminal crossover groups like The Punch Brothers\, Strength In Numbers and the ever-changing Bluegrass Allstars call home. The music is vocal and instrumental\, allowing the band to experiment with arrangements and tailor the compositions to become vehicles for exploration. Hank Smith plays banjo\, Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw plays fiddle and is lead vocalist.  The Current includes Billie Feather on guitar and Stevie Martinez on bass. \nIn addition to joining the band in their music\, Mallarme will perform quartet arrangements of “Amazing Grace” by Jennifer Higdon\, ” At the Purchaser’s Option” by Rhiannon Giddens\, “Sweeter Than Wine” by Ken Benshoof and “Fisher’s Hornpipe” by Mark O’Connor. \nBecome a Mallarme Member Subscriber and receive admission to this and all Mallarme’s 2021-22 series concerts!\nhttps://app.arts-people.com/index.php?membership=mmcp\n \nRECORDED BY MARK MANRING \nCarolina Theatre of Durham was a co-sponsor of this concert!

SUMMARY:SERIES CONCERT - My Daughter the Singer
DESCRIPTION:Heartland Baroque blends music and narrative in a concert celebrating Venetian-born composer Antonia Bembo (c. 1640-c. 1720). Giving insight into the lives of women composers of the Baroque\, as they often overcame excruciating circumstances\, Heartland Baroque is eager to tell Bembo’s inspiring story through her music and readings of documents from her life. Bembo survived personal tragedy and creatively reinvented herself. A student of Cavalli\, admired for her singing\, Bembo had a tumultuous family life. She suffered abandonment and abuse from her unfaithful husband\, and though she brought him to trial for his crimes\, he was found not guilty. With the help of guitarist Francesco Corbetta\, Bembo fled Venice for France. Once established in Paris\, Bembo became revered by King Louis XIV for her exquisite compositions\, and he later granted her a pension. Bembo’s ability to continue her career in spite of adversity shows her profound versatility. \nARTISTS: HEARTLAND BAROQUE\n\nMolly Quinn – soprano\nMartie Perry and David Wilson – violin\nBarbara Krumdieck – cello\nBilly Simms – theorbo\, lute\, guitar\nKeith Collins – dulcian \nPROGRAM\nAntonia Bembo:\n    Per il Natale (In braccio di Maria) from Produzioni Armoniche (1701)\nAmor mio\, facciam la pace from Produzioni Armoniche (1701)\nLes sept Psaumes de David\, Volume 4 (1694) – Psalm 50: Fais-moy misericorde\nBiagio Marini: Sonata for Two Violins\, Op. 8\, No. 1 (1629)\nGiovanni Legrenzi: Sonata La Benaglia Op. 4\, No. 3 (1656)\nFrancesco Cavalli: Menfi\, mia patria\, regno from La Statira (1655)\nFrancesco Corbetta: Two Ciaconnas from Varii scherzi di sonate per la Chitara spagnola (1648)\nJohann Rosenmüller:  Sonata Seconda à 2 in E Minor (1682)\nFrançois Couperin:  L’ Apothéose de Lully-Sonade en Trio (1725) \nBound by a passion for playing music of the 17th and 18th-Centuries\, Heartland Baroque members\, Martie Perry and David Wilson\, baroque violins\, Keith Collins\, dulcian\, Barbara Krumdieck\, baroque cello\, and Billy Simms\, theorbo\, hail from North Carolina\, Indiana\, California\, and Maryland\, and often perform together in other well-known historically-informed period instrument ensembles around the country. Heartland Baroque dives into the baroque musical world with vigor\, showing off the immediacy and technical brilliance\, the vivacity and profundity\, the lilt\, complexity\, and spontaneity of its composers.  Most recently Heartland Baroque completed a residency at the esteemed Avaloch Farm Music Institute\, and were featured in concert at the 2018 North Carolina H.I.P. Music Festival. They have also performed concert tours in North Carolina\, and have presented concerts at the Boston and Berkeley Early Music Festivals. His first show was at the IEEE annual banquet and featured a self-built single color laser projector and used function generators out of the college lab to perform live abstracts to music. Intrigued with how laser projectors work\, Jason started building his own systems in his garage. In 2013 Jason build his first full color RGB system. This was also the first system that interfaced with control software providing recording capabilities. Using Mathematics and Science\, Jason was able to transform a laser into an artistic display of abstract colors and patterns and sync it to music. Learning about various hardware and software platforms Jason decided to build a custom live performance console. The console features old school analog controls\, as well as new school digital controls. What really sets his console apart are the two laser projector preview windows. With the power of the live console and the recognition of the community Jason formed Salty Robot Productions in 2018. Salty Robot Productions has been working out of the Charlotte NC area and has been able to provide laser FX for the Carolina Panthers and All Elite Wrestling. Live laser shows have been included with Western Piedmont Symphony in Newton NC\, Yuri’s Night at Kennedy Space Center\, and at Bach Akademie Charlotte. Salty Robot Productions partnered with local cellist Kelvin Chang to form Chromatic Strings in 2022\, blending classical cello music with abstract laser entertainment.

SUMMARY:Series Concert: The Golem silent film with live score
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 30\, 2023 @ 7:00 pm\, Carolina Theatre – Cinema One\, Durham\nSilent Film with original music for baroque string quintet\, written by Mark Bergman\nDownload The Golem press release\n\nARTISTS\nDavid Wilson\, Matvey Lapin – violin/ Suzanne Rousso – viola/ Barbara Krumdieck – cello/\nMark Bergman – bass/ Jennifer Streeter – harpsichord \n\n\nWidely recognized as the source of the Frankenstein myth\, the ancient Hebrew legend of the Golem provides substance for one of the most adventurous films of the German silent cinema. Suffering under the tyrannical rule of Rudolf II in 16th-century Prague\, a Talmudic rabbi creates a giant warrior to protect the safety of his people. Sculpted of clay and animated by the mysterious secrets of the Kabbalah\, the Golem is a seemingly indestructible juggernaut\, performing acts of great heroism\, yet equally capable of dreadful violence. \nWhen the rabbi’s assistant takes control of the Golem and attempts to use him for selfish gain\, the lumbering monster runs rampant\, abducting the rabbi’s daughter and setting fire to the ghetto. With its remarkable creation sequence (a dazzling blend of religion\, sorcery\, and special effects) and the grand-scale destruction of its climax\, “The Golem” was one of the greatest achievements of the silent era and remains an undeniable landmark in the evolution of the horror film. \n\n\nSingle tickets are $30 through the Carolina Theatre Box Office https://carolinatheatre.org/events/film/the-golem-with-live-score/ \nMallarme Series subscriptions are currently available: INFO \nDOWNLOAD THE Golem Program Insert
