SUMMARY:NC HIP FESTIVAL PREVIEW LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:With Dr. Jonathan Kramer \nHistorical performance practices or HIP\, is the presentation of music in a style we believe is representative of how a work was heard at the time it was written. The 2018 NC HIP Music Festival will present musical performances and events centered around these practices with period instruments from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. Dr. Jonathan Kramer from NC State and Duke universtiy\, will speak about the HIP movement in the last 30 years. He will reveal the differences between historical and modern performance\, how standards of early music performance are determined (since we have no musical recordings from the 17th century) and the development of musical instruments from Renaissance to the 19th century. \nFREE

SUMMARY:2020 North Carolina HIP Music Festival INFO
DESCRIPTION:  \n(ticket prices listed are single ticket or donation at the door prices if you do not have a HIPster pass)\nHIPster passes give you access to all HIP events for $85 including Duke Performances concert on Feb 15. Instructions on how to reserve a seat for the Feb 15 concert will be sent after your HIPster pass purchase! \n\nFriday\, January 31\, 3:00pm The Cedars\, Chapel Hill\nLECTURE: How the Early Music Movement Got to be HIP (FREE)\nplus a period-instrumental Zoo!\nRichard and Judith Fox – presenters\nThe Early Music Movement was mainly a post- WWII development\, whose mission was to challenge and reform the repertoire and performance practices of Western Classical Music. Early music performers rediscovered forgotten repertoire\, recovered premodern instruments \, followed performance practices at variance from modern musicianship\, and altered the relationship between performer and listener by their style\, dress\, and playing locales. Initially\, the Early Music Movement\, like all social movements\, depended on “charismatic” zeal and attracted performers with diverse objectives and orientations.  Arnold Dolmetsch\, David Munroe\, and Noah Greenberg represent this diversity\, and we will see/hear examples of the Early Music they championed. Over the last 75 years\, many of their innovations have become accepted by contemporary performers\, and we will see/hear examples of this new mainstream. “Historically informed performance” or “HIP” is their label today for a creative translation of past music that respects its differences from present practice. The talk will be illustrated with many musical examples and there will be a “petting zoo” of instruments from the past to try afterward (none that bite or claw\, however). \nSaturday\, February 1\, 3:00pm Hayti Heritage Center\, Durham\nCONCERT: Everywhere a Theorbo (Tickets $25/$10)\nMallarmé Chamber Players: Music of William Lawes\, Thomas Baltzar\, Bellerofonte Castaldi and Robert di Vesée\nWilliam Simms and Richard Stone – theorbo; David Wilson and Elizabeth Phelps – violin; Gail Ann Schroeder and Brent Wissick – viola da gamba \nSaturday\, February 1\, 8:00pm\, Baldwin Auditorium\, Durham\nCONCERT: A Retrospective Recital (FREE)\nWorks by Beethoven and Vorisek played on an 1815 Streicher copy by Thomas and Barbara Wolf\nRandall Love – fortepiano and piano more\n \nSunday\, February 2\, 5:15pm Duke Chapel\nCONCERT: Duke Bach Cantata Series (FREE)\nPhilip Cave – conductor J.S. SUMMARY:2023 NC HIP MUSIC FESTIVAL LECTURE: Black Fiddlers of Monticello
DESCRIPTION:Black Fiddlers of Monticello tells the story of the three fiddle-playing sons of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson\, as well as their fiddling cousins\, the Scotts. Both families played for important events at Monticello and lived in downtown Charlottesville for a time. This multimedia program will teach participants about these fiddlers’ important musical contributions\, and you will hear what the music sounded like through a performance demonstration by David McCormick – violinist\, scholar\, and 2020 Fellow of the International Center for Jefferson Studies. \nBaroque violinist David McCormick is artistic director of Early Music Access Project\, founding member of Brooklyn-based medieval ensemble Alkemie\, and the executive director of Early Music America. \nThis performance is in Goodson Chapel\, which is in the Divinity School of Duke University. You may park in the Bryan Center parking deck\, walk towards Duke Chapel and the Divinity School is the building immediately next to Duke Chapel on its right side (if you are facing the chapel). Walk along the Chapel’s right side\, and enter the Divinity School at the back-most entrance\, go down the stairs and Goodson chapel is on your left.

SUMMARY:2023 NC HIP MUSIC FESTIVAL CONCERT: Inspired by Bach: The Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin
DESCRIPTION:We don’t know exactly when or exactly why Bach wrote his Sei Solo for “violin without bass” (probably around 300 years ago)\, and after their mid-19th century rise to prominence they have remained a staple in violin learning and literature ever since. Much has been made of the grammatical curiosity on their title page (Sei Solo reading variously as “you are alone” or “he is alone”)\, since Bach was famously meticulous and could easily have written Sei Soli (six solos).\n \nDuring the height of the pandemic\, violinist Nicholas DiEugenio explored these works in conjunction with interviews of his musician-friends doing social justice work\, in an effort to feel less alone himself. Since then\, Nicholas has created works of visual art inspired by each of these incredible\, monumental pieces\, which will be projected as the music sounds. \nFree\, no reservation required
