DESCRIPTION:Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas are often considered the pinnacle of German sacred music\, works whose theological depth and emotional resonance touch deep places in the human soul. This year’s cantata series\, Bach &\, features cantatas\, concerti\, and organ works by Bach and his contemporaries\, illuminating the connections and differences between these Baroque masters. This concert pairs the music of Bach with the French composer Henri Dumont. \nPieces by Dumont include:\n* “Super flumina Babylonis”\n* “Litanies de la Vierge.” \nCompositions by Bach include:\n* “Nun komm\, der Heiden Heiland\,” BWV 61\,\n* Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor\n* Pièce d’Orgue\, BWV 572 \nPerformers:\n* Dr. Philip Cave\, Duke Chapel conductor-in-residence\, director\n* Dr. Roseen Giles\, Mrs. Alexander Hehmeyer Associate Professor of Music at Duke\, baroque flute\n* Dr. David Lim\, Duke Chapel organ scholar\, organist\n* Mallarmé Music\, ensemble on period instruments\n* Vocalists \nFree admission. Paid parking is available on a first-come\, first-served basis in the Bryan Center Parking Lot at 125 Science Drive. DESCRIPTION:Performed by Forgotten Clefs\, “Surviving Inquisition” traces the musical journey of Sephardic Jews from the thirteenth century in Alfonso el Sabio’s Castile\, through the early years of the Inquisition in late fifteenth-century Catholic Spain\, to Italy in the early seventeenth century\, where many Jews lived following expulsion.
