SUMMARY:Duke University Bach Cantata Series - Sunday\, November 9\, 5 pm
DESCRIPTION:Listen to the music of two Baroque-era master composers-Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi-and will be performed by an ensemble comprising students\, music department faculty\, and Mallarmé Music Baroque instrumentalists. \nRepertoire\n* Vivaldi’s Concerto in A minor\, RV 522 (for two violins)\n* Bach’s Vivaldi Concerto in A minor\, BWV 593 (organ solo)\n* Bach’s Non sa che sia dolore\, BWV 209 (a cantata for soprano\, flute\, and strings)\n* Vivaldi’s In furore iustissimae irae\, RV 626 (a cantata for soprano and strings) \nThe performers are:\n* Dr. Philip Cave\, Conductor-in-Residence at Duke Chapel\, director\n* Mallarmé Music\, Baroque Period instrumentalists\n* Dr. Clara Rottsolk\, Assistant Professor of the Practice of Music in Duke’s Department of Music\, soprano\n* Dr. Roseen Giles\, Mrs. Alexander Hehmeyer Associate Professor of Music in Duke’s Department of Music\, flute\n* Dr. David Lim\, Duke Chapel Organ Scholar\, organ\n* Yasmine Kwong and Justine Shih\, Duke Students\, violin \nFree admission and free parking. ADA parking is available at the surface lot at the same address. \nJohann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas are often considered the pinnacle of German sacred music\, works whose theological depth and emotional resonance touch deep places in the human soul. This year’s cantata series\, “Bach &\,” features cantatas\, concerti\, and organ works by Bach and his contemporaries\, illuminating the connections and differences between these Baroque masters. \nThis concert contrasts the music of Bach and Vivaldi. A lot of Vivaldi’s music was written for young players\, which is recognized in this performance by having Duke students play the solo violin parts. They will perform on the music department’s historic period instruments\, tuned to Baroque-era pitch. \nLearn more about the music in this concert at a pre-concert lecture by Duke Chapel Organist Chad Fothergill at 4:00 p.m. in the Divinity School’s Goodson Chapel. \nFamilies with young children\, or those not able to attend the concert\, are welcome to visit the rehearsal in Duke Chapel on Saturday\, November 8\, between 1:30 and 4:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:PARTNER EVENT: the breath of life with the Concert Singers of Cary
DESCRIPTION:the breath of life\, conducted by Lindsey Woodcock\nSaturday\, April 11\, 7:30 pm\nSt. Francis United Methodist Church\, 2965 Kildaire Farm Rd\, Cary \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Concert Singers of Cary and Mallarme Music will perform the breath of life\, Dan Forrest’s evocative multi-movement reflection on the beauty and joy of new life juxtaposed with the pain of loss. Using choir\, strings\, piano\, solo cello\, percussion\, organ\, and electronics\, Forrest creates a rich and poignant soundscape intertwined with profound and compelling texts from Scripture as well as classic and modern poetry. The emotional arc of the music beautifully mirrors that of life\, from the miracle of birth to the bereavement of death\, the love that makes life meaningful\, and the human breath that connects us all. \nOn either side of this poignant work\, there will be several shorter pieces that connect to the same themes of love\, loss\, and the breath that connects us all. Those pieces are: \n“All that Hath Life and Breath” by Rollo Dilworth\n“Come to Me\, My Love” by Norman Della Joio\n“Geistliches Lied” by Brahms (also with string orchestra)\n“The Music of Living” by Dan Forrest \nTickets $5-$25 PURCHASE
